Chichester Canal
A short canal with an exciting history, the Chichester was the source of inspiration for one of Turner's most famous paintings.
This partly-navigable canal formed part of the Portsmouth & Arundel Navigation, the start of the long-lost inland water route from Portsmouth to London. Though it is just four miles long, there is much to do on the Chichester Canal: you can take a narrowboat trip, go canoeing, enjoy bird watching, or cycle the towpath.
The canal starts at Chichester Canal Basin and meets the English Channel at Birdham. It formed the backdrop to a painting by JMW Turner of Chichester Cathedral in 1829.
